International Women's Day started after the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire on March 25, 1911. IN a sweatshop in New York City, 123 women and 23 men were locked into their factory sewing room by their managers and burned to death. Subsequent labor and women's movement protests changed the laws regulating factories and health and safety of workers. it wlso engendered the day marking the significance of women's work and women's contributions to society, International Women's Day. Celebrated mroe widely in Europe for many decades, the holiday has spread throughout the world. It is often marked by offfering women branches of beautiful yellow Mimosa blossoms.
