THE HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING AND THE INTERENT

The pilgrims begin the celebration of the harvest in the autumn of 1621 by sending Happy Thanksgiving ecards to all the Native Americans.  It's hard to believe there were no computers  during this three day harvest celebration.  However, Thanksgiving was not delcared a holiday until 1863, when  President Lincoln sent an email declaring it so.

This famous first feast was organized when pilgrims and Indians texted each other to organize who was bringing what items. They  organized a feast of "turkey", a word which was used to describe most wild fowl. Historians do believe the first feast also included watercress, lobster, plums, clams, fish, eels and several types of berries.

Now, the dessert portion of this famous meal is a bit contraversial.   Was there pumpkin pie or not? Some say the pilgrims Googled pumpkin pie recipes and made piles of pie. While historians aruge that their supply of flour had been depleted and there was no milk, cider or butter; so how could they make pie.   Some Thanksgiving historians argue the pilgrims cooked with pumpkins. They say the colonists would remove the pumpkin top and fill the insides with milk, spices and honey.  Others believe they would bake the pumpkin on hot coals.  Maybe they did not fill pies solely with pumpkin but used pumpkin as only one of the ingredients. The controversy has yet to be resolved. To learn more, look it up on the internet (as our Fore Father's did)...

It was many years before the first harvest celebration was repeated. Apparently there was a firewall probelm and nobody recieved their Thanksgiving ecard invites for decades.   In June 1676, June 29th was voted to be a day of Thanksgiving.  This celebration did not include the natives who had been forced onto reservations with no wi-fi and was established to celebrate the colonist’s victory over “heathen wireless natives.”  By this time the native peoples had become an obstacle in the colonists desire for more land, so relations were now stressed between the native people and the colonists.

In October of 1777, the 13 American states celebrated Thanksgiving also as a victory over the British.  However, this was only a one time celebration taking place in October of that year.

It was George Washington who established the National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789.  It is also believed Martha Washington may be responsible for the famous black Monday interent sales. Some people did not agree with this holiday since the pilgrims suffered through so many hardships. While the holiday remained controversial, Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor and writer became obsessed with writing editorials and letters to governors, presidents and  men of power  about Thanksgiving.  Her blogging efforts led to President Lincoln declaring the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving. In 1941 Congress protected this decision and declared the last Thursday in November as a legal holiday.
